Help Stop the Spread of Whirling Disease

The Division of Wildlife has regulations that control the stocking by state and private hatcheries of fish exposed to whirling disease. It is important to have the cooperation of anglers in preventing the spread of whirling disease.
  • Clean your boots, waders and other gear before moving from one fishing site to another, and again with chlorine when you get home if you fished at a known whirling disease water.
  • If fishing many sections of a stream, start at the higher elevations.
  • Clean your boat and trailer of mud, aquatic plants and water before fishing new waters.
  • Don't dispose of fish entrails, bones or other parts in or near any body of water or down kitchen drains. Dispose of fish parts as solid waste.
  • Never transport fish from one water to another.

Put Them Back Alive...
The following steps will ensure that a released fish has the best chances for survival:

  • Do not play any fish to total exhaustion.
  • Keep the fish in water as much as possible when handling and removing hook.
  • Remove hook gently - do not dqueeze the fish or put fingers in gills.
  • If deeply hooked - cut the line - do not pull hook out.
  • Release the fish only after its equilibrium is maintained. If necessary gently hold the fish facing upstream and move the fish slowly back and forth.
  • Release the fish in quiet water.
